Amsterdam
The Netherlands

The first Lutheran congregation had fled persecution in Antwerp, where it had begun in 1566 as a unique free church with a confession and a church order. In Amsterdam, it was organized in 1588. The members worshipped in each other´s homes until 1600 when the Netherlands, which had become Reformed, granted toleration to Roman Catholics and Lutherans. The Lutherans in Amsterdam obtained the use of a warehouse, which they transformed into a church, later known as the “Old Lutheran Church at the Spui.”
