Switzerland

First Lutheran congregation in Switzerland was founded in Geneva (1706). In 1701, six German businessmen and their families received permission from the Geneva government to worship according to Lutheran tradition. They had arrived from Lyons after the revocation in 1685 of the Edict of Nantes, which had granted toleration to Protestants. By 1707, in Geneva a congregation had been formed and a pastor received from Germany. Lutheran congregation in Zurich was founded in 1851 and in Basel in 1891. The Federation of Evangelical Lutheran Churches in Switzerland and in the Principality of Liechtenstein was founded in 1972.
