The Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission began work among the Serere-speaking people in 1974. High priority was given to Bible translation, literacy work, and the training of local people as teachers. In 1975 the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia joined this mission. In 1979, the American Lutheran Church, in consultation with partner churches in Cameroon, the Central African Republic and Nigeria, began work among the Fulani-speaking people.
