Rwanda

The Lutheran Church was first introduced in Rwanda in the 19th century by German missionaries. After the First World War, the missionaries were sent back to Germany and the Lutheran church activities were taken over by the London Missionary Society and later by the Presbyterian Church in Rwanda. In 1994, a large number of refugees returned from Tanzania, among them more than 17,000 Lutherans and quite a number of ordained pastors. Lutheran  congregations were founded in several places. The current Lutheran Church of Rwanda therefore has its origins in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania.
