The Reformation came to Norway via Denmark. The Danish Church Ordinance of 1537 was accepted by the diets in Oslo and Bergen in 1539. The Danish hymnals, orders of worship, church order, catechism, and ecclesiastical law were taken into use in Norway. Danish Bibles were still in use after 1814, as Danish was the church language. The Norwegian Bible Society was founded in 1816. A complete translation of the Bible into Norwegian came in the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th century (the Old Testament was published in 1891 and New Testament in 1904).
