In 1550 Kaunas, one of the larger towns of Lithuania, accepted the Augsburg Confession. In 1547 the first book in Lithuanian language was published: a Catechism, based on Luther’s Small Catechism and compiled by Martynas Mazvydas (Martinus Mosvidius). The first hymnal in Lithuanian was published in 1560. Jonas Bretkūnas who had studied in Wittenberg in the 1550s and was one of the first pastors to preach in Lithuanian and Old Prussian, contributed a lot to the development of the Lithuanian literary language. He finished the first translation of the Bible into Lithuanian in 1590.
