Liberia

Lutheran mission was started in 1860 by Morris Officer and other missionaries sent from North America. Morris Officer set up his station, Muhlenberg (Millsburg), 40 kilometers inland from the city of Monrovia, on the St. Paul River. Officer learned the ways of the people, and opened a school for boys. In 1898, a school for girls was established. The next station was opened in the first decade of the 20th century in the Kpelle county, followed by Sonoyea east of the river and Zorzor station in the Loma county. Among the missionaries long remembered is Esther Bacon. Her midwifery and concern for the Kpelle and Loma made her well-known among local people. In 1947, the establishment of an indigenous Lutheran church in Liberia was organized, putting authority and responsibility in the hands of the national leaders.
