Indonesia

October 7, 1861, is remembered by many Batak people in Indonesia as the day the Christian church began in their midst. The first emissaries of the Rhenish mission (Barmen) came then to the edge of the Batak country. One of the pioneering missionaries, Ludwig Ingwer Nommensen, penetrated to the hallowed heart of Batak tribal land. In 1889 the first woman missionary and in 1891 the first two deaconesses arrived from Germany. In 1899 a Batak mission society was initiated by indigenous pastors to spread the gospel in and beyond Sumatra.
Today the LWF National Committee in Indonesia comprises 13 Lutheran Churches.
