Missionary work in Papua New Guinea started in 1886 through the pioneering work of Johannes Flierl from Germany. The first period of missionary work (1886-1918) was mainly done by two mission societies from Germany, the Neuendettelsau and Rheinish Mission. The second period (1919-1956) of mission was a time for indigenous growth.
