Many Croatian and Dalmatian nobles embraced the Protestant Reformation in the mid-16th century, and the first Croatian Bible was published in 1562. The most famous Lutheran Reformer of Croatian origin was Matthias Flacius Illyricus (Croatian: Matija Vlačić Ilirik) who had studied in Wittenberg.
