In 1936 Lutheran mission begun in Colombia by the independent mission group CELMOSA.

In 1946 the work was taken over by the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Many missionaries were sent to Colombia in the following years. The Colombian Evangelical Lutheran Church (IELCO) was founded in 1958. It had a synodical structure with a strong accent on congregational responsibility. In 1978, the IELCO became an independent church and changed its synodical structure into a national organization.
