Chile

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chile traces its origins to the 1860's, when the first German Lutherans immigrated to Chile and colonized the southern part of the country.  Separation between church and state was included in the new constitution in 1925, prior to which the formation of non‑Roman Catholic churches was not allowed.  At that time, the Lutheran congregations formed an association which resulted, in the late 1930's, in the formation of the Evangelical German Church in Chile. In 1959 the church changed its name to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chile.  During the 1960's, in a process of "chileanization" and the formation of new congregations, the church began to work in Spanish, and invited the Lutheran Church in America to cooperate in this task by sending missionaries.
