Central African Republic

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Central African Republic became autonomous in 1974 when it separated from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cameroon. During its early independence the church grew rapidly in the villages on the western Cameroon border. Besides the history this church shares with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cameroon, it also has a history of its own. In 1929 mission explorers Okland and Weinhardt from the then American Sudan Mission passed the western border of the Ubangi-Shari region. Three years later first baptism took place – that of Joseph Garga, later a chief and district judge over the Gbayas. Chains of chapels were built and staffed by the Gbaya. In 1951 a Bible school was built in Baboua.
