Botswana

Evangelical Lutheran Church in Botswana is a united church. Its origin relates to the missionary work of German, Swedish and Finnish mission societies as well as of the Namibian Lutheran Church in the 19th and 20th century. Since 1862 Hermannsburg Mission established congregations in the southern part of the country whereas the Berlin Mission founded a congregation in the South Western Circuit in 1951. Around the beginning of the 1970's, the Church of Sweden Mission established itself in the South Eastern region of the country, especially in the mining district of Phikwe whereas the Finnish Evangelical Mission Society worked in the northern region of the country.  At the same time, the Lutheran Church in Namibia (with a support from the Rhenish Mission) started a vigorous mission work in the Kgalagadi desert in the North-Western region and the South-Western part of the country (Kang- Hukuntsi mission, Sehitwa mission).
